Building a Campfire the No Trace Way

Creating a fire the no trace way is a 180 degree turn from your high school pep rally bonfire. The goal is to have as little impact as possible. Instead of a six foot high flamethrower, you are trying to create a fire that will provide only the heat you need for cooking or drying and no more. In addition, to size the other factor you need to consider is site selection and how to handle fires in different terrains.

The idea of minimizing the fire is because the smaller the fire the smaller the impact on Mother Nature and the easier it is to return the area to its previous state. Burning large logs is fun, but unnecessary to provide for cooking or drying. To keep fires brief and small the easiest thing to do is use the rule of the wrist. Basically, you are trying to find existing dead logs that are no larger than the size of your wrist. Anything else will be too large and burn for an excessive amount of time.

Perhaps even more important than fire size is campfire site selection. If your campsite has an existing fire ring by all means use that first. If not then you will need to select a spot. Try to keep the fire away from tree branches roots and other large rocks that could be blackened or cracked.

Ideally, you want to build a mound with a fire pan. A fire pan is something like a pie tin or aluminum foil that you can build the fire in. It creates a layer between the fire and the earth to minimize impact.

If you can’t use a mound you can dig down to the mineral layer of soil and create your fire in the pit.

Once you are done with the fire it is important to clean up. Burn all the firewood down to fine white ash and push embers towards the middle to get everything. Once everything is burned down disperse the ashes liberally and away from water sources. If you created a hole replace the soil or sod back and apply water.

By following the steps above you will be sure to preserve nature for more visitors.
