How to Plan a Community Camp Out
In most local communities there are fantastic parks that often sit vastly under utilized. A great way to introduce families and other members of the community to park features is to sponsor a community camp out.
One of the more innovative techniques I’ve seen was the family movie night. Kids love movies and staying up late. The event was marketed as a camp out and family movie night. Everyone brought their tents and sleeping bags. In addition to the movie there were several other events to introduce families to the different features of the park.
After everyone setup their tents there was a cookout featuring hot dogs and other delicious treats. After the cookout the park sponsored a fishing event near a pond in the park. The park service provided worms, poles and instructions on fishing in the pond. Many children did not have fishing poles. Having the park service provide the poles was very helpful. It allowed for a great introduction to fishing for children. Many of them caught their first fish at the event.
As it got darker it got closer to movie night time. The recreation department had hired a local DJ to provide the movie. They setup a large screen so everyone could see the movie. They also had an intermission where they played additional games.
After the movie there was a campfire for smores and other good treats.
In the morning the park service provided donuts and coffee.
I thought this was a very good agenda. It provided the community with a fun way to access different resources that are available, but often go underutilized.
